Storylines

  • Today’s contest marks the first of five Illinois Lottery Cup games between the Wolves and the IceHogs. Every meeting at Allstate Arena will be an occasion as the Wolves honor defenseman BRENT SOPEL for his 1,000 professional games prior to tonight’s faceoff — and the team will wear commemorative Fight Against Cancer jerseys for the games on Jan. 17 and 31.

  • The Wolves have gone 4-1-1-0 in their last six games to move into second place in the Midwest Division and pull within 4 points of Rockford. Chicago also has one game in hand on the IceHogs.

  • The Chicago Wolves wrapped up 2014 with an overtime game at home and opened 2015 the same way Friday. There was, however, one major difference between the games as Wolves defenseman BRENT REGNER broke free from the pack during 3-on-3 play Friday and delivered the game-winner against Hamilton with 42.6 seconds left on the clock.

  • It wasn’t the first time REGNER came through in the final minute of overtime this year. When the Wolves traveled to Rockford on Nov. 28, REGNER planted himself just outside the IceHogs crease and DMITRIJ JASKIN’s shot from the slot banked off his skate and past Scott Darling with 11 seconds left for a 4-3 Chicago victory.

By The Numbers

3.30 – It wasn’t the first time REGNER came through in the final minute of overtime this year. When the Wolves traveled to Rockford on Nov. 28, REGNER planted himself just outside the IceHogs crease and DMITRIJ JASKIN’s shot from the slot banked off his skate and past Scott Darling with 11 seconds left for a 4-3 Chicago victory.

1K – When the Wolves travel to Grand Rapids on Saturday, Jan. 10, it will mark the 1,000th regular-season game that JOHN ANDERSON has coached for the Wolves. The 57-year-old has delivered a 569-316-24-89 record in his first 998 regular-season games, which is good for a .627 winning percentage.

29 – The Wolves rank third in the AHL with 29 power-play goals and their 20.3 conversion percentage ranks fifth.

Player Spotlight

42 JakeChelios

#42 Jake Chelios
Defenseman

A personal milestone was hit on Friday night as rookie forward Jake Chelios tallied his first goal in the American Hockey League in the second period against Hamilton.

The 23-year-old defenseman may not have tallied a goal through his first 21 games, but he did record 13 assists — the most of any Wolves’ defenseman and only second to forward Pat Cannone (16).

Chelios has been one of the strongest blue-liners for the Wolves this season, not only on the scoresheet but also on special teams. Nine of his 13 assists have come while on the power play, and that’s been essential to the Wolves success on the man advantage.

Ryan Hartman

#24 Ryan Hartman
Right Wing

While there haven’t been too many offensive bright spots for the IceHogs over the last three weeks, Hartman has been the most recent Rockford forward to have success.

The IceHogs have averaged just under two goals per game over their last seven, and that is including a four goal performance against the Wolves  on Dec. 28 at home. Hartman recorded a goal and an assist in the 3-2 shootout victory  in a Christmas Eve matchup at Grand Rapids.

Rockford has won just two of their last six road games, and the Wolves hope that streak continues in their favor as a big winter rivalry heats up in Rosemont tonight.
