Tale of the Tape: Jan. 8

Friday, Jan. 8, 7:30 p.m. Cedar Park Center

Chicago looks to stay perfect for the new year as the Wolves take a two-game win streak into Texas for a two-game set starting tonight at the Cedar Park Center. This weekend’s series marks the last non-divisional game for the Wolves, who play Central Division foes the rest of the season.

Chicago snapped a nine-game losing streak against Texas in their last meeting Dec. 17 at Allstate Arena. Chicago scored three times in the first period and appeared in control of the contest before the Stars stormed back with three goals in the third to push the game into extra time. After a scoreless overtime period, the Wolves scored the only goal in the shootout on JORDAN SCHMALTZ’s nifty backhander.

Shortly before the Wolves boarded their flight Thursday for Austin, head coach JOHN ANDERSON informed defenseman ANDRE BENOIT and center PAT CANNONE they had earned spots in the 2016 AHL All-Star Classic. Benoit was tapped once before (2013) while it’s the first nod for the Wolves captain.

By The Numbers

13: In each of the Wolves’ last 13 games, the team that scored the first goal went on to win the contest. In addition, the team that scored the first goal never trailed in those 13 games. The last Wolves game where both teams led was Dec. 4 at Grand Rapids.

32: ANDRE BENOIT TURNED 32 on Wednesday, joining D-partner PETER HARROLD (also 32) as the team’s elder statesmen.

34: Wins in a Wolves uniform for JORDAN BINNINGTON, which ranks ninth-best in team history.

82.3: Faceoff percentage for ZACK TORQUATO, who won 14-of-17 draws in the circle against Lake Erie on Jan. 3.

Player Spotlight

#24 Jordan Schmaltz – Defenseman

JORDAN SCHMALTZ turned in the first multiple-goal effort of his professional career with two goals in Chicago’s 5-2 win over Lake Erie on Jan. 3. SCHMALTZ scored during the second and third periods, notching the game-winner in addition to leading the team with four shots and a +3 rating. He was named the game’s No. 1 star while scoring his first goals since Nov. 6.

SCHMALTZ ranks second in team scoring among rookies, posting 16 points on three goals and 13 assists.

The rookie defenseman is also one of four Wolves players to have appeared in all 32 games this season, extending his iron-man streak to 115 consecutive games played, which dates to his sophomore year at the University of North Dakota.

#23 Travis Morin – Center

It’s third times the charm for Texas Stars forward Travis Morin. The 31-year-old received his third AHL All-Star selection on Thursday as he currently leads the league with 35 points this season (10-25=35).

The Stars captain has skated in a 445 games over the seven-year history of the franchise with 393 career points (131-262=393).

Morin won’t be alone at the competition in New York either. He’ll be joined by two of his teammates Esa Lindell and Brendan Ranford. The Stars were one of five teams with a league-high three all-stars.
