Wolves go #BackInBlack, reveal striking alternate jersey

The Chicago Wolves introduced their new alternate jersey on Monday: a black sweater with white trim and green accents that represents a departure from previous designs and a signal of the organization’s bold branding plans for the 2016-17 season and beyond.

“We loved our last alternate jersey,” said Wolves senior vice president of operations Courtney Mahoney. “It was very classical and had an old-time look. But for this jersey, we wanted something very modern. Based on our fans’ overwhelming response to our black Fight Against Cancer commemorative jerseys two years ago, black was a color that was important to us. We also wanted to match the green of the wolf’s eyes in our logo.”

Once Mahoney and the team’s braintrust determined the parameters for the new jersey, Wolves senior graphic designer Troy Mueller delivered the look that serves as the franchise’s first black alternate jersey since the 2004-05 season.

“Troy did a really amazing job with it,” Mahoney said. “The logo doesn’t have the stick and puck, which is different for us. I think the jersey will look great on the ice, so we’re looking forward to seeing it.”

In keeping with the American Hockey League’s new code for uniform colors, which calls for home teams to wear white jerseys prior to the Christmas break and dark jerseys thereafter, the Wolves will don their new alternates more frequently from Dec. 30 to the regular-season finale on April 15.

However, fans have several opportunities to enjoy the new color scheme immediately. Black jerseys, black caps with a green logo and other merchandise based on the alternate jersey are available at ChicagoWolvesStore.com. The Wolves also are expanding on the black and green motif for the team’s new television broadcast graphics and the designs inside Allstate Arena during the team’s home games.

The Wolves host their 23rd home opener at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15, versus the Grand Rapids Griffins. The team will host a pregame tailgate party featuring free food, live music, games, face-painting and more from 2 to 6 p.m. in Allstate Arena’s west lot.
