Tim Breslin Unsung Hero Award

Breslin-95-4 The Chicago Wolves presented defenseman Mark Matheson with the 2012 Tim Breslin Unsung Hero Award on Sunday, March 25. The award recognizes the Wolves player who best typifies Breslin’s on-ice spirit and team-first attitude.

Breslin, who was one of the first three players signed by the franchise, passed away on Feb. 9, 2005, due to complications from appendiceal cancer, which is a malignancy of the appendix. The Addison native and Driscoll Catholic High School graduate played five seasons with the team and was a member of the 1998 Turner Cup Championship squad. The Breslin family was on hand to present Matheson with the award.

In his second season with the Wolves, Mark Matheson has played a critical leadership role for the team's young defensive corps. His consistent play and steady work ethic set invaluable examples for younger pros, and watching him has helped many of them learn how to succeed in the professional game. He can always be depended upon to go the extra mile for the team, on or off the ice, and his quiet brand of leadership has earned him a position of respect within the organization as a whole this season.

Past winners of the award include Jaime Sifers (2011), Matt Anderson (2010), Steve Martins (2009), Brian Sipotz (2008), Brian Fahey (2007), Kevin Doell (2006), and Tim Wedderburn (2005).
