DES MOINES, Iowa — The Chicago Wolves notched consecutive road wins for the first time this season as they edged the Iowa Wild 4-2 Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena.
Defenseman Brent Regner tallied his first goal of the year while forwards Shane Harper, Rob Bordson, and Pat Cannone rounded out scoring and goaltender Matt Climie earned his fifth win of the season.
The Wolves (7-2-2-0) struck in the first period as Regner opened scoring at 14:27. The defenseman moved in from the blueline and fired a high shot on net that beat Wild goaltender John Curry stick-side as he was screened in front by Bordson.
Right wing Marc Hagel responded for the Wild (2-9-0-0) just over three minutes later after defenseman Petteri Lindbohm whiffed on an outlet pass. Hagel received a centering pass from Zack Mitchell and buried it in the top corner.
Chicago reclaimed the lead at 9:17 in the second period on Harper’s tally. Terry Broadhurst fed a quick pass to the front of the net for the right wing, who held on to the puck, deked around Curry, and went top-shelf for the 2-1 lead.
Bordson added a third tally with a tip-in for a two-goal advantage. The forward deflected defenseman Brent Sopel’s heavy slap shot through traffic at 17:05 to put the Wolves up 3-1.
The Wild cut Chicago’s lead in half 1:51 into the final frame. Mitchell beat a defenseman to a long pass, moved in on a breakaway, and beat Climie cleanly in the high corner before Cannone iced the game on an empty-net marker with 1:10 remaining.
Climie (5-1-1) kicked out 32 shots. Curry (0-4-0) stopped 25 and suffered the loss.
The Wolves close out their two-game series with Iowa tomorrow at 3 p.m. Chicago returns from its nine-game road trip on Nov. 22 to host Iowa at 7 p.m. For more information, call 1-800-THE-WOLVES or visit ChicagoWolves.com.
