Wolves’ streak ends at six

The Chicago Wolves took an early lead against the Texas Stars, but surrendered four unanswered goals to fall 4-2 on Saturday night at H-E-B Center.

Forwards Tye McGinn and Matthew Weis scored goals for Chicago (33-18-5-1) while goaltender Oscar Dansk (17-9-3) stopped 24 shots for Chicago (33-18-5-1), which remained in the Central Division’s top spot by one point over Grand Rapids.

Michael Mersch and Erik Condra scored power-play goals for Texas (28-23-4-3) while Nicholas Caamano and Robbie Payne also scored for the Stars. Goaltender Landon Bow (20-11-5) recorded 18 saves.

The Wolves took a quick lead, scoring two goals on their first three shots on net. It started with McGinn scoring with his first goal in a Wolves sweater at 6:59, tipping a shot from defenseman Kevin Lough past Bow.

Weis made it 2-0 with a wraparound that snuck under Bow and trickled into the net at the 8:58 mark.

The Stars pulled within one before the first period was over when Mersch scored on the Texas power play at 19:22 with a one-timer from the slot, then a pair of second-period goals gave Texas the 3-2 lead.

Condra scored on the next man-advantage, smacking a rebound past Dansk 5:19 into the second period before Caamano scored on an odd-man rush at 9:55 after a turnover in the neutral zone.

Payne widened the gap to 4-2 with his goal at the 5:14 point of the third period, a two-goal deficit the Wolves could not overcome despite a late push.

The Wolves stay in Texas for a 10:30 a.m. game Tuesday at San Antonio. Chicago returns home on Saturday, March 9, for American Girl Night against the Iowa Wild.
