Former Chicago Wolves goaltender Ville Husso stopped all 26 shots he faced to lead the San Antonio Rampage to a 3-0 victory over the Wolves on Friday night at AT&T Center.
San Antonio (3-0-0-0) received power-play goals from Nathan Walker and Derrick Pouliot in the first two periods and made them stand up.
Elmhurst native Garret Sparks (0-1-0) stopped 24 of 26 shots in his Wolves debut. Chicago (0-2-0-0) earned six power-play opportunities, including a pair of 5-on-3 chances, but couldn’t convert them.
The Rampage opened the scoring at 10:42 of the first period when Walker took advantage of the team’s first power play. His give-and-go with Klim Kostin found him alone behind the defense and Walker steered the puck past Sparks.
Pouliot gave San Antonio a 2-0 lead at 3:25 of the second period as he corralled a loose puck, skated into the slot and fired a wrister top-shelf.
Wolves head coach Rocky Thompson pulled Sparks with 3:25 left for an extra attacker, but San Antonio stemmed Chicago’s rally and Walker produced an empty-net goal with 1:31 to play.
The Wolves meet San Antonio again at 7 p.m. Saturday before wrapping up their road trip on Friday, Oct. 18, at Rockford. Chicago hosts the Rockford IceHogs for another Illinois Lottery Cup clash on Saturday, Oct. 19, at Allstate Arena.
