The player checking in at No. 38 on the Wolves Top 40 Countdown, presented by Jewel-Osco, is one of the most popular players in team history: Nathan Oystrick.
When the Wolves asked the fans to vote for their favorite players as part of the organization’s 20-year anniversary celebration in 2014, Oystrick received more than enough votes to take one of the spots on the blue line. And why not?
As soon as Oystrick joined the Wolves, he played a key role on two of the highest-scoring teams in franchise history. The Regina, Saskatchewan, native stacked up 15 goals and 32 assists for the 2006-07 squad, which earned him a spot in the AHL All-Star Game, a place on the AHL’s All-Rookie team and the nod for the AHL’s Second All-Star Team.
The next season, Oystrick produced 15 goals and 28 assists during the regular season — then three goals and eight assists in the postseason — to help the Wolves capture the 2008 Calder Cup championship.
After spending the 2008-09 season with the NHL’s Atlanta Thrashers, Oystrick returned to the Wolves the following year and posted 23 more points. He finished his Wolves career with 37 goals and 77 assists in 205 regular-season games — setting the franchise record for most game-winning goals by a defenseman.
