MILWAUKEE—The Wolves extended their points streak to four games after they fell to the Milwaukee Admirals 2-1 in a shootout Sunday afternoon at UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena.
Viktor Neuchev scored for the Wolves but Chicago came up short and had its three-game winning streak snapped to settle for a split of the weekend series between the Central Division rivals. Cole O’Hara notched the winner in the shootout and also scored in regulation for the Admirals.
“Points are huge, whether you get them in October or April,” said Wolves goaltender Zach Sawchenko, who was sensational with 38 saves to capture First Star of the game honors. “To get three out of four during the weekend is obviously big. We would have liked to get the four but you can’t win them all.”
The Admirals struck first when O’Hara found the back of the net midway through the opening period.
Early in the second, Neuchev knotted things at 1-1 with his second goal of the season. The forward, playing on his 23rd birthday, took a feed from Stiven Sardarian in the slot, spun and fired a shot that solved Milwaukee netminder Matt Murray. Sardarian and Ivan Ryabkin earned assists on Neuchev’s score to extend their individual points streaks to three games.
After a scoreless third and overtime, O’Hara ended it in the shootout to give the Admirals the second point.
Still, it was Sawchenko’s stellar effort that allowed the Wolves to extend their points streak.
“I was just keeping it simple,” Sawchenko said. “I’m a veteran guy and I kind of know what to expect with a team like Milwaukee. The guys did a great job of allowing me to do my job, keeping lanes where I could see the puck and clearing out rebounds.”
Murray finished with 19 saves to record the win for the Admirals.
Chicago fell to 3-4-0-1 on the season while Milwaukee now stands at 5-2-0-0.
Up next: The Wolves host the Manitoba Moose on Tuesday at Allstate Arena (11 a.m.).
