The Chicago Wolves began a two-game weekend series in Texas with a 4-3 loss against the Stars on Saturday night.
Ronan Seeley, Aleksi Heimosalmi and Pierre-Olivier Joseph all scored but it wasn’t enough as Texas took the first of back-to-back games.
Texas struck first just a minute, 12 seconds into the opening period when Dylan Hryckowian converted on a breakaway, beating Wolves goaltender Cayden Primeau to the glove side.
The Wolves responded early in the second period when Seeley scored his first goal of the season 3:25 into the middle frame. The defenseman followed up an Ivan Ryabkin shot and buried the rebound past Stars goaltender Brandon Halverson. Ryabkin and Viktor Neuchev were awarded assists.
Chicago added on as defenseman Heimosalmi tallied 2:16 later with his team-leading fourth marker of the season.
With the teams skating four-on-four, Felix Unger Sorum led a three-on-one rush into the Stars’ zone before feeding Gabriel Seger in the high slot. Seger then found an open Heimosalmi at the left circle, where the defenseman ripped a one-timer through Halverson’s five-hole. Seger, who has recorded six points (three goals, three assists) over his last four games, and Unger Sorum each added helpers on the play.
Texas countered with two unanswered goals, as first defenseman Kyle Looft dashed end-to-end to score on a breakaway :15 later to tie the game at two. Christian Fitzgerald then restored the Stars’ lead, sending Texas into the third period with a 3-2 advantage.
Matthew Seminoff added an insurance goal :10 into the final frame to extend the Stars’ lead to two.
The Wolves continued to apply pressure, as Joseph pulled the team within one midway through the third period. Unger Sorum carried the puck up the right boards before finding Joseph streaking into the Stars’ zone. Joseph unleashed a snapshot from between the circles that beat Halverson to the blocker side.
Unger Sorum and Seger added assists on Joseph’s third goal of the season.
The Wolves couldn’t solve Halverson the rest of the way as Texas held on for the win.
Halverson (19 saves) got the win in goal for the Stars while Primeau (26 saves) suffered the loss for the Wolves.
Chicago dropped to 5-6-0-1 on the season while Texas moved to 3-7-1-1.
